Answer | The simple solution to climate change is for us all to use less energy .... Simple, Problem Solved.
But that is indeed the solution; however in our modern day consumerist society it is easier said that done.
By Energy, I am meaning fossil fuels, and food we eat ourselves.
- We need to encourage longer-life on consumer products.
- Travel - by making better use of shared resources - Buses, Trains, Car Share Schemes - and of course active Travel like Bicycling, or just plain walking.
- Paperless Office is something I have always been kean on, and in general better use of technology. (i.e lower power usage, like LED Lights, more efficient household appliances)
- buy British made/grown (Not Assembled) campaign
- You will notice I have missed out plant based foods. We need to eat less food, and eat better quality food. Being an ex-pig farmer, and indeed closely linked to the farming industry, you might understand that I am a meat-eater. For years I was brought up on the belief meat and two veg was a balanced diet. We need to get a practical unbiased education out there as what healthy eating is. I would also encourage more cooking from first principles at home.
My Biggest environmental issue is that of dumping into rivers. This includes wasted fertiliser, as well as sewage outflow, and indeed someone emptying paint in a river -( i know that is a crime, however that does not stop it being done). I try to do my bit, having a framed lawn, at first I thought this was a waste of time in my small lawn with dartmoor on the horizon, however seeing the mists of insects, well I am guessing that is a good thing. . I do not like intensive farming practises, I am aware of the benefits, however i do not they are good for the environment.
None of this forms part of any promises, just my thoughts whilst writing. In life everything is a balance, we just need to tip the balance a little less in the favour of profits, and more towards quality of life.
Picking one action from all of the above, which I think is achievable, perhaps without legislation, is better food education. Cooking at home, knowing what you eat, knowing what you should eat. Yes reducing Meat consumption, but making it better quality in terms of animal welfare, food miles, nutrition. I would also put nutrition labelling on Alcohol. Being a diabetic I can tell some red wines are more packed with sugars than others.
Given time I would like to flesh out my thoughts more fully, however I am getting quite a few campaign emails and I am trying to concentrate on the ones who have given me an address in my constituency
